The Miscalculations and Missed Opportunities that Led Putin to War in Ukraine

When Bill Clinton telephoned Vladimir Putin on New Year’s Day, 2000, to congratulate him on his appointment as acting President, Putin told him: “There are certain issues on which we do not agree. However, I believe that on the core themes we will always be together.” Clinton was equally upbeat. Putin, he said, was “off to a very good start.”

Later it would be said that the American President had been naïve and that Putin’s protestations of friendship with the West were a masquerade from the start. But Clinton was not alone in seeing the Russian President as a valuable partner in the post-Cold War world. Britain’s Prime Minister, Tony Blair, thought “Putin admired America and wanted a strong relationship with it. He wanted to pursue democratic and economic reform.” The Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, pronounced him ‘a Russian patriot’ and Clinton’s successor, George W. Bush, found his support after 9/11 simply “amazing… He even ordered Russian generals to brief their American counterparts on their experiences during their Afghanistan invasion in the 1980s… I appreciated his willingness to move beyond the suspicions of the past.”

On both sides, however, those suspicions never entirely went away. The Warsaw Pact had been dissolved and the Soviet Union no longer existed. “But NATO still exists,” Putin complained. “What for?” From the Kremlin’s standpoint, it was a fair question. “We all say,” he went on, “that we don’t want Europe to be divided, we don’t want new borders and barriers, new ‘Berlin Walls’ dividing the continent. But when NATO expands, the border doesn’t go away. It simply moves closer to Russia.”

The bureaucracy on both sides had a lot to answer for. The Pentagon, under Donald Rumsfeld, was allergic to anything which might constrain America’s freedom to act as it wished. The Russian General Staff was obsessed with the idea that NATO was planning to deploy troops along Russia’s borders. Putin himself acknowledged that “many things that seem fine in negotiations often end up bogged down in practice.” But even if the blame were shared, the West often gave the impression of deliberately dragging its feet. Francis Richards, who at that time headed GCHQ— the British equivalent of the U.S. National Security Agency—remembered: “We were quite grateful for Putin’s support after 9/11, but we didn’t show it very much. I used to spend a great deal of time trying to persuade people that we needed to give as well as take . . . I think the Russians felt throughout that [on NATO issues] they were being fobbed off. And they were.”

The result was a growing sense among the Russian elite that Putin was being played. Vladimir Lukin, who had been Yeltsin’s first ambassador to the U.S., protested: “One sided steps cannot be taken forever . . . Decisions should go both ways. They should not end just in smiles and encouragement.” There was grumbling, not only in the army and navy but also within the Presidential Administration, at what was termed a “policy of concessions” which brought Russia no tangible benefit.

Putin held firm. Russia had made “a strategic choice,” he said: “Russia today is cooperating with the West not because it wants to be liked or to get something in exchange. We are not standing there with an outstretched hand and we are not begging anyone for anything. The only reason that I pursue this policy is that I believe it fully meets [our] national interests . . . A rapprochement with the West is not Putin’s policy, it is the policy of Russia.”

Comment The above extract is from Time Magazine. The west continues to seriously provoke Russia to beyond the point of no return , seriously misinforming their poorly educated jingoistic masses on this and so many other subjects, as they did for the last two world wars. they don’t care hopw many millions of common people they kill as a result. It is all about money and consequent power.

There was a golden opportunity for a new balance of power , with a mind on wise custodianship of the planet, post Glasnost. The war mongering profiteering western elite did not want balance. They wanted the world to buy into their opprerssive exploitative psuedo democracies.

Ukraine, aided by the Anglo American alliance have recently attacked a Russian airbase in Crimea , blowing up an arms dump.. These people don’t accept Crimea as Russian. They claim and act as if it is part of Ukraine. NATO are rapacious and mealy mouthed. Our so called Western Democratic Independent media never talks about Ukraine’s human rights violations in the Donbas or how the west ignored the Minsk Agreement, using it simply to buy time to build up their armesd forces and contrive NATO intervention as a matter of freedom fighting, rather than land and resource grabbing bullies that they are..

The Western elite are very scared about Russia and China’s involvement in Africa, where they prefer to promote serious overpopulation with related health and poverty issues. The last thing they want is serious education or challenge to the tyrannies the west promotes to keep their strangehold on Africa’s appalling corrupt governments and vital resources. They use posturing charities to make it look as if they care. The elite are ace at virtuue signalling, as are all the self styled liberal left.. R J Cook

Putin speaks to Saudi crown prince

The two leaders spoke just days after US President Biden’s controversial trip to Riyadh

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation in global oil markets with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in a phone call on Thursday.

The conversation came just a few days after US President Joe Biden traveled to Riyadh for an official visit which appears to have yielded mixed results.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that relations between Washington and Riyadh have hit historic lows. According to the report, citing sources in both capitals, the personal enmity between US President Joe Biden and bin Salman has been an important factor in the fraying of relations.

Meanwhile, Putin and Bin Salman praised the high level of “friendly” bilateral relations between the two nations and their cooperation within the OPEC+ group, the Kremlin said in a statement.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies such as Russia, which together comprise OPEC+, are “consistently fulfilling their obligations” to keep the balance and stability in the global energy market, the two leaders said, according to the Kremlin.

Last month, the group agreed to increase output by 648,000 barrels per day (bpd), or 0.7% of global demand, over July and August. The decision came as Western nations had been pressuring OPEC to address global energy shortages exacerbated by sanctions on Russia. The move, however, failed to drive oil prices lower at that time.

On Thursday, Putin and bin Salman also discussed bilateral relations and focused on “expanding mutually beneficial trade and economic ties,” the Kremlin said. Back in May, Riyadh said that Russia’s military action in Ukraine would not affect Saudi Arabia’s relations with either Russia or Ukraine, as the kingdom sought to maintain its extensive trade relations with both countries.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation in Syria, according to the Kremlin readout. On Tuesday, after the summit in Tehran where Putin met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Russian president said the US should stop “looting” Syria. Hundreds of American troops are still present in Syria, where they are controlling the oil wells and wheat fields in the country’s northeast.  You can share this story on social media: Follow RT on

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke about Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, sanctions and the confrontation with the West in an interview to RT and Sputnik on Wednesday.

Speaking with RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan, the minister explained why, despite a promising start, peace talks with Ukraine effectively broke down in spring.

He shared his views about the risks of a nuclear war with the West and how Western-supplied heavy weapons affect the fighting on the ground in Ukraine, as well as decision-making in Moscow regarding the conflict.

Lavrov also discussed the effects of the sanctions on the European economy and the delivery of Russian gas to EU member states.

Russia offers fast-track citizenship to all Ukrainians

All Ukrainians, as as well as citizens of the two Donbass republics, may now apply using a simplified procedure

The presidential decree modifies the procedures earlier reserved for the citizens of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the residents of the two southern Ukrainian regions that have been under the control of the Russian forces almost since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

Back in 2019, a simplified procedure was introduced for those living in territories controlled by the two Donbass entities, which in February were recognized by Moscow as sovereign states. They could have their citizenship paperwork processed in just three months.

As of February, 950,000 people had reportedly filed applications and 770,000 of them have become Russian citizens. Monday’s decree also explicitly stated that people serving in the Donbass militias and its local law enforcement authorities are eligible to apply for Russian citizenship as well, and that their status as foreign military personnel could not be used as a reason to deny them citizenship.

Alexander Nepogodin: What does the future hold for the regions of Ukraine now controlled by Russia?

Restoring peacetime life to the territories under Russia’s control is vital as the what’s known as the “special military operation” proceeds in Ukraine. Currently, these are the Kherson Region, most of the Zaporozhye province, and a large part of the area around Kharkov.

Moscow has begun restoring the economic and social infrastructure, as well as improving the living conditions in the area’s concerned. Military-civil administrations have already been established, and the major cities often receive visits from high-ranking Russian officials. An opinion widely held in Russia is that these lands will remain with the country, and there is no turning back now.

RT examines the attempt to restore peace in the Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions, bearing in mind the strategic importance of the lands in southern Ukraine for Russia, and what the future holds for them.

Uncertain future

The discussion of plans to make the Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions part of Russia pushes the limits of the military operation in Ukraine. The official approach remains the same though: Ukraine should be “denazified” and its military potential blunted, which requires securing control over certain territories. Judging by the political activity of Russian-appointed officials in these areas, the military operation will go well beyond the borders of the Donbass, depending on the situation on the frontline.

Andrey Klishas, the chair of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, has sent an important signal, stating that not only Donbass residents, but all Ukrainian citizens, have the right to choose their destiny.

Kirill Stremousov, the deputy chair of the Kherson Region military-civil administration, has told Reuters that the fighting could affect the timing of Kherson’s formal plan to join Russia, and a decision is likely “towards next year.” He didn’t rule out the possibility of holding a referendum. In early May, however, he insisted there would be “no referendums,” accusing Ukraine of “spreading fakes” about Russian plans to vote on the establishment of a Kherson People’s Republic.

Miss Roberta Jane Cook sheds tears for the vile NATO provoked regime change elite war on Russia with Ukraine as proxy This is the Global Police State.

Britain’s elite propaganda is risible. They backed the U.S Cousin elite to block Nordstream 2. They led a NATO that violated the Minsk Agreement, put placemen in charge of Ukraine and provoked this war, which morons in Britain either are to stupid to understand or just don’t care. Boris conducts the orchestra reprising inspiring World War Two overtures and military marches, the last Lancaster Bomber – used for war crimes in Cologne, Dresden and the Damn Busters – flies over London to salute our old Queen and her entourage in a fake version of sanitised British history. Pomp and Circumstance defines the U.K elite.. Britain’s elite have never gone to war for anything but power and money, as is true for the U.S former colony which broke away over money for the parasite mad King George , from an inbred minor German Royal family imported as a barrier to the Catholic Stuart in bred relatives. In bred rule , or so it seems.

Eurovision Con Contest – a comment by Miss Roberta Jane Cook.

To my mind , the Eurovision song contest, which now includes Israel, is musical vinegar. Each country has a remit to present the most insipid bland drivel with pleasant messages of hope , peace and love. It is worrying that so many watch this nauseating ostentatious display of multi culture and take it seriously. It is obvious that they have had their jab to immunise them against political reality.

This weekend’s ‘show’ wins the prize for making me sick. Ukraine was inevitably going to win, with its number one cheerleader running a noble second. We have to accept the message war in Ukraine is an outcome of demented Putin playing Hitler to Johnson’s role as saintly Churchill – the latter getting far too much credit for a world war he also wanted.

This is world war is for no better reason than that NATO wants Ukraine and the eastern world beyond, for it’s elite parasites leading a ‘multi culture’ of divided and ruled impoverished muonic masses. Russia knows this. NATO is resourcing this war , Britain is in charge of a warped propaganda machine which has even dredged up Douma as a a fact of being bombed by chemical weapons, It was not. It was a White Helmet stage show orchestrated by the U.K.

But the masses have to take propaganda for truth in a Britain at war with Russia. The world wide consequences of wrecking the global economy doesn’t matter to the pampered few who own most of the wealth. They had no problem with Russian oligarch money until the oligarchs would not betray Putin.

So we had that awful Ukrainian song with its mawkish lyrics and dreadful vinegar music. It was more psychological warfare to hypnotise the masses. NATO wound up this war, as they did in Iraq and the Middle East beyond – all for wealth and power, but sold as freedom fighting. The only free people are the super rich. They can buy themselves anything and out of anything, as Prince Andrew buying himself out of sex abuse allegations demonstrated.

Significantly the masses have ‘freedoms ‘ which means they can do stuff under state surveillance within strictly prescribed legal limits in an ever expanding public space that includes our homes and social networks , for our ‘safety’ ( sic ). So, we have the Eurovision con contest, a pathetic solidarity ritual – like clapping the clapped out NHS-to justify a war that is bound to get even worse.

Weird War Three

by Miss Roberta Jane Cook

Comment The west has done this, Lavrov is right and must respond accordingly. NATO stand for greed and power. I am sure Bill Gates has great ideas for Ukraine and Anglo U.S have never liked Nordstream 2, condemning it long before this Weird War 3. From the elite’s point of view, tunes of glory , medals for the maimed and ceremonies for the dead are enough to fool the masses. They have no vision for humanity. The Russian Revolution only happened because a desperate Germany smuggled Lenin back into Russia to stir up dissent – because they were losing the war. This elite did nothing about Hitler because they wanted him as bulwark against russian Communism. without Russia, Germany would have won. It is a game for tehse people, still using religious drivel and fantasy God to comfort and motivate the fearful. Miss Roberta Jane Cook.

Vladimir Putin’s ‘bloated’ face is ‘too big for body’ sparking rumours of cover-up

James Hockaday

As an experienced press photographer preceding the digital age, it is obvious that this picture is fake. The head has no visible neck. The thin white trace around his face is a poor effort at digital blending. The head’s angle is all wrong in relation to the rest of the image .It may be good enough for Britain’s Politically Correct sneering patronising elitist Private Eye magazine, but it is the most pathetic piece of propaganda yet. This is all on the level of portraying German World War One soldiers as baby stabbers. It sets in perspective the rape claims that now include an 11 year old boy. Britain and the U.S have a lot of war crimes under their belts but are exempt from prosecution because they are judge and jury. Miss Roberta Jane Cook.

The sight of Vladimir Putin’s ‘bloated head’ at a virtual security council meeting has sparked rumours of a botched cover-up.

Some suggested his head had been artificially attached to his body in manipulated footage as his opposition claim he is due to have surgery.

Rumours over the Russian tyrants health have been swirling since his decision to invade Ukraine.

Comment Western media has to slip in inflammatory drivel about Putin being a tyrant. The U.K in particular is a dictatorship recklessly influencing the U.S and EU to the brink. NATO created this nightmare as follow on for the bio engineered Covid. They have taken the so called free democratic world to the brink, by dragging Scandinavia into the showdown.

It doesn’t matter to privileged Churchill wannabe Johnson and his idiot entourage, including low ranking officer Wallace ( another war mongering fantasist ), that he has led the campaign to wreck the global economy because it doesn’t suit the super rich the way it is. At least overrated Churchill had been a warrior’ The U.K had a hidden agenda in leading over half of the ignorant masses out of the EU – ironically to stop Islamic immigration which has now turned into a flood. I am not surprised Putin is talking about nuking Britain. Miss Roberta Jane Cook.

Russia-Ukraine war: Moscow threatens ‘retaliatory steps’ over Finnish Nato bid; UN to investigate human rights abuses

Léonie Chao-Fong (now); Martin Belam and Helen Livingstone

18:07 Daniel Immerwahr

The horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made the whole world afraid of the atomic bomb – even those who might launch one. Today that fear has mostly passed out of living memory, and with it we may have lost a crucial safeguard, Daniel Immerwahr, associate professor of history at Northwestern University, writes.

On an August morning in 1945, 600 metres over the Japanese city of Hiroshima, a small sun came briefly into existence. Few remember a sound, but the flash printed shadows on the pavements and sent buildings thrashing. The explosion – 2,000 times greater than that of any bomb yet used – announced not only a new weapon but a new era.

It was a stunning military victory for the United States. Yet jubilation there was undercut by “uncertainty and fear”, the newsman Edward R Murrow observed. It took only a moment’s reflection on the bomb’s existence to see the harrowing implication: what had happened in Hiroshima, and three days later in Nagasaki, could happen anywhere.

The thought proved impossible to shake, especially as, within the year, on-the-ground accounts emerged. Reports came of flesh bubbling, of melted eyes, of a terrifying sickness afflicting even those who’d avoided the blast. “All the scientists are frightened – frightened for their lives,” a Nobel-winning chemist confessed in 1946. Despite scientists’ hopes that the weapons would be retired, in the coming decades they proliferated, with nuclear states testing ever-more-powerful devices on Pacific atolls, the Algerian desert and the Kazakh steppe.

The fear – the pervasive, enduring fear – that characterised the cold war is hard to appreciate today. It wasn’t only powerless city-dwellers who were terrified (“select and fortify a room in which to shelter”, the UK government grimly advised). Leaders themselves were shaken. It was “insane”, US president John F Kennedy felt, that “two men, sitting on the opposite sides of the world, should be able to decide to bring an end to civilisation”. Yet everyone knowingly lived with that insanity for decades. It was as if, wrote the historian Paul Boyer, “the Bomb” were “one of those categories of Being, like Space and Time, that, according to Kant, are built into of the very structure of our minds, giving shape and meaning to all our perceptions”.

Boyer remembered the unsettling news of the Hiroshima bombing, which occurred the week of his 10th birthday and shaped the rest of his childhood. Today, someone remembering the bomb that well would have to be 86 at least. The memory of nuclear war, once vivid, is quietly vanishing. The signs on the fallout shelters – those that remain – are rusted, and most of the world’s population can’t even recall an above-ground nuclear test (the last was in 1980). The bomb no longer gives “shape and meaning to all our perceptions”; until recently, many thought of it only rarely. It has been tempting to see nuclear war as a bygone terror that no longer terrifies, like polio.

Ignorant Stupidity

In this European country the aristocracy are still in power and in touch with their U.S cousins. Boris himself is U.S born but claims to have given up his U.S passport.

Much fuss is made about the U.K figurehead Queen Elizabeth II being 70 years on the throne. She is descended from a long line of minor German aristocrats. Britain’s extant aristocracy have a vested interest in pumping up BLM to scapegoat their downtrodden moronic indigenous white working classes.

The British elite are so pompous about war , heroism and equality. Our monarchy are symbolic of everything that is wrong about this country and its antiquated traditions. Wellington described his soldiers as ‘the scum of the earth.’ He was vile as Prime Minister and had a whole aristocratic British funded coalition to defeat Napoleon, who was also fighting his piles. The Wellington stately home in Hampshire has the ‘hero of Waterloo’ and namesake of the eponymous rubber boot, standing on a very tall plinth before the gatehouse. This countries elites , old and nouveau , have no right to claim moral superiority. Britain helped cause two previous world wars for money and power. This obvious World War Three is no different.

I trawl through mountains of daily anti Russian propaganda, none of it touching on the trigger issues . So now we have the inevitable anti Russian pre planned NATO scheme – engulf Scandinavia. Moronic British people are falling for the Ukraine noble war drivel as they did for Covid lies and social control measures before.

If Britain was a democracy we wouldn’t have to be reminded all the time. It is like constantly reminding us that a bus is a bus , a house is a house. I have many contacts in the U.S, but they are en masse oppressed and too far away to sense the danger. Maybe they fear CIA monitoring. I am monitored by the police and probably MI5 due to certain connections. The elite get the best education .like PM BJ, so know how to deceive with words.

NATO are not peace keepers. They are aggressors out to create a global police state for elite benefit and social control. Multi culture is a con. Only the elite rich culture counts, which is why Russia’s asset stripping neo Thatcherite Russian Oligarch’s were so welcome with the Russian peoples’ gold. What a pity Yeltsin drank himself to death and Vladimir Putin tried to restore Russia’s true history and dignity.

Only the moronic multi culture of religious bigotry , ignorance , in fighting, Rowling Wizardry led transphobia is fit for the masses. Our dutiful Queen is the epitome of this on the higher ruling plane , heading up the only class that matters here. They are the 10 % who own and live on 90 % of the land, telling us their wars are for good and consequent mass immigration, with rising living and housing costs a necessary sacrifice.

Do you really believe the PR photos of the young queen, then a mere princes, was actually a wartime army truck driver ? Do you disbelieve the subsequent banned picture of her fascist Uncle Edward teaching her, her sister and mother the Nazi Salute ?

Britain has a history of war crime, as does the U.S – whose record with Red Indians and Latin America is appalling – having invented concentration camps during the land grabbing Boer War. Any country that can airbrush and condemn Julian Assange is a dictatorship. These mealy mouthed money morons are setting up the appropriately named Swedes for close range Russian Nukes and more. Russia had no issues with Scandinavia , but it does now.

When the Nukes start flying , our computer systems will crash and we will head back to a New Dark Age. Britain’s ludicrous Wallace ranting on about his old Scots Guard’s Regimental Glories in Crimea, or the well named feminist Truss patronising Russia on a solid basis of ignorant stupidity, does not augur well for survival Miss Roberta Jane Cook

‘Your hands are covered in blood’: Russia TV hacked over Ukraine war as Vladimir Putin celebrates Victory Day

Poppy Wood

Russian state television channels were hacked to display messages telling viewers that their hands are “covered in blood” over Ukraine, as the Kremlin celebrated the anniversary of its victory over Nazi Germany.

With millions tuning in to watch the Victory Day parade in Moscow on Monday, programme names were changed to display messages such as “television and the government is lying” and “your hands are covered in blood from the deaths of thousands of Ukrainians and their children”.

The names of every TV station were changed to read “blood is on your hands” – including the Kremlin’s main propaganda channel Russia One.

Ukraine war cuts foreign investors off from their Russian assets

Western sanctions on Russia were designed to isolate the country from the international financial system but the economic offensive has also left international traders who hold shares in Russian companies cut off from their assets.

As Russian forces pushed into Ukraine, the US and the EU unleashed waves of measures against companies and individuals they alleged had close ties to Vladimir Putin’s regime.

Among the first moves were measures to stop Russian companies from raising money on overseas markets, like London or New York.

These prompted an equally forceful response from Putin: capital controls that banned Russia-based institutions from transferring foreign currency abroad. This, in effect, froze their assets inside Russia.

With the opposing nations at what amounts to economic war, foreign investors with investments in Russia seem “caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place”, says Steven Hill, a partner at law firm K&L Gates.

UK announces fresh Russia sanctions targeting £1.7bn worth of trade

Britain has announced fresh sanctions targeting £1.7bn worth of trade with Russia in a bid to “further weaken Putin’s war machine”.© Reuters

They include sharply higher tariffs on £1.4bn worth of imports from Russia and bans on exports to the country that are worth £250m a year.

The measures, announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan, mean that the total value of products subject to full or partial import or export sanctions since the invasion of Ukraine is more than £4bn.

Britain is increasing tariffs on goods such as platinum and palladium, both of which Russia is a leading producer, by 35 percentage points

The export bans cover more than £250m worth of goods in sectors of the Russian economy that the government says are most dependent on UK goods, targeting chemicals, plastics, rubber and machinery.

Mr Sunak said: “Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine is causing suffering on an enormous scale. His barbaric war must be stopped.”

Victory Day: As Russia marks thede end of World War Two, will Putin start a Third?

When Vladimir Putin gives his Victory Day speech on Monday, his war against Ukraine will be in its 74th day.

As the Russian president ordered his troops over the border on February 24, he thought Kyiv would be in his hands within the week.

Instead, part of his army has been forced to retreat and a more limited campaign to annex the east of the country has made slow progress.

Russia’s military is weakened and the Kremlin has resorted to hiding the scale of its losses – estimated to be at least 15,000 by UK military intelligence – from its people.

On Monday, like every year, tanks will roll through Moscow, troops will salute the country’s leaders and fighter jets will streak across the capital’s skies.

Russian fighter jets form ‘Z’ symbol amid fears over what Victory Day could bring

Harrison Jones

Preparations for Russia’s ‘Victory Day’ parade have seen fighter jets form the infamous ‘Z’ symbol over Moscow.

The country’s most important holiday – traditionally marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 – is also set to see President Vladimir Putin parade his nuclear weapons tomorrow.

The capital’s Red Square will be the scene of a huge parade of soldiers and military equipment – but there is unease about what else the event may bring this year, including fears around conscription, amid the war in Ukraine.

Rehearsals this weekend have seen various weapons on display, including the thermonuclear RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile, in what some consider to be another chilling threat from the Kremlin.

The EU can’t quite get it together on a Russian oil embargo

Ellen Ioanes

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a proposal this week for the European Union to impose a gradual embargo on Russian oil as part of its harshest sanctions package yet. The biggest obstacle to such a move? The bloc has yet to agree on when and how those controls will be instituted — not only signaling disunity in the bloc’s response to the invasion of Ukraine, but also potentially softening the embargo’s intended economic blow, at least in the short term.

Von der Leyen, who heads the legislative arm of the EU, announced the plan as part of a broader sanctions package, which includes banning Russian propaganda outlets from broadcasting in the EU, imposing individual sanctions on Russian generals involved in the massacre at Bucha and the siege at Mariupol in Ukraine, and removing three banks, including SberBank — Russia’s largest — from the SWIFT payments system. EU member nations like Germany previously resisted the call to cut off Russian oil, citing the damage it could have on their own economies; von der Leyen addressed those concerns, saying, “Let us be clear: it will not be easy. Some Member States are strongly dependent on Russian oil. But we simply have to work on it.”

Sofia Sapega and her dissident boyfriend Roman Protasevich were on board a plane from Athens to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius when it was forced to changed course to head for Minsk after a supposed bomb scare.

The airline said Belarusian flight controllers told the crew there was a bomb threat as it was crossing through the country’s airspace and ordered it to land in Minsk. The couple were then pulled off the flight and detained in a move which called international outrage.

Comment This woman is a dissident. The Anglo U.S jailed Chelsea Manning , Julian Assange et al for exposing a fraction of their war crimes. US shared intelligence before Ukraine sank Russian warship, says official

By Aamer Madhani, Nomaan Merchant and Lolita C Baldor, Associated Press  23 hrs ago

The US has said it shared intelligence with Ukraine about the location of the Russian missile cruiser Moskva prior to the strike that sank the warship, an incident that was a high-profile failure for Russia’s military.

But Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a statement on Friday that the US “did not provide Ukraine with specific targeting information for the Moskva”, although he acknowledged that the US and allies routinely share intelligence with Ukraine.

“We were not involved in the Ukrainians’ decision to strike the ship or in the operation they carried out,” he added.

“We had no prior knowledge of Ukraine’s intent to target the ship.”

An American official said on Thursday that Ukraine alone decided to target and sink the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet using its own anti-ship missiles.

Comment This so called war on Ukraine is becoming tiresome to put it mildly. It is way beyond being a proxy war. It was set up by Anglo U.S led NATO and is in our face NATO versus Russia. These people have the same attitude as the vile Duke of Wellington who called his working class – soon to be killed or crippled – troops , the scum of the earth. The attitude was still there with Haig ‘ I must have more men’ in 1914, and little better in World War Two and Korea. But for communist PM Harold Wilson, it would have been the same in Vietnam. Now these war mongers have never had it so good.

The Charge of the Light Brigade

BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSONI
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

II
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
   Someone had blundered.
   Theirs not to make reply,
   Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
   Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

III
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
   Rode the six hundred.

IV
Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
   All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
   Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
   Not the six hundred.

V
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
   Left of six hundred.

VI
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
   All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
   Noble six hundred!

Comment

This Tennyson poem was from the Crimean War, October 1853 to February 1856 in which Russia lost to an alliance of France, the Ottoman Empire, the United Kingdom and Piedmont-Sardinia. It was ultimately about power, exploiting religious differences and taking the masses for fools. It is the same story now. British Royalty were leading their masses in a war against their moronic cousin leading a Russia that had equal contempt for its masses.

The Charge of The Light Brigade obscures the reality of the event. Lord Cadigan , an inbred English moronic aristocrat resented fellow aristocrat , Lord Lucan ( ancestor of the one who raped and killed his children’s nanny ) , beating him to command the cavalry division in this badly run campaign .

So Cardigan chose to ignore Captain Nolan’s carried orders to capture guns on one side of a valley, charging all the way to the guns at the end, wiping out his brigade. Cardigan spent so long arguing with Nolan, the latter had his head blown off by a cannonball. The best account I ever read of a British elite’s mentality that gets worse, is ‘The Reason Why. ‘ by Cecil Woodham Smith

Cecil Woodham-Smith was born in 1896 in TenbyWales. Her family, the Fitzgeralds, were a well-known Irish family, one of her ancestors being Lord Edward Fitzgerald, hero of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Her father Colonel James FitzGerald had served in the Indian Army during the Sepoy Mutiny; her mother’s family included General Sir Thomas Picton ( one of Wellington’s better officers featured in the Sharpe Stories ) a distinguished soldier who was killed at Waterloo.
